ASRock X79 Extreme9 LGA 2011 Motherboard Review

ASRock is a brand that conjures mixed emotions with HardOCP editors. The first two boards we reviewed in ASRock Z68 line up pretty much sucked. The quality was bad, the overclocking was nothing special, and stability wasn anything to write home about. Then we looked at ASRock X79 Extreme4 which was a good board. While not perfect, it was solid in almost all areas. This time we got the Extreme9 to evaluate. We thought this board would basically be the Extre Toms Outlet me4 LGA 2011 motherboard with some added features. This is not the case.

ASRock, for those of you who may not know, is a subsidiary of Pegatron, which was spun off of ASUS some time ago. ASRock is a brand that many readers champion in the HardForum, and subsequently asked us to review. Again our experiences continue to be mixed bag at best. Some of the boards we seen aren the worst, but some are a far cry from being good either. The first two boards (ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Motherboard Review / ASRock Z68 Pro3 LGA 1155 Motherboard Review ) had some of the worst build quality we ever seen and the ASRock X79 Extreme4 was on the surface at least on par with most of what out there from MSI, Gigabyte, etc. The ASRock X79 Extreme9 should be the pinnacle of what ASRock has to offer and we expect it to be at least everything the Extreme4 was. It should be more considering it is one of ASRock flagship motherboards priced at $345.

The ASRock X79 Extreme9 is based off Intel X79 Express chipset. The X79 Express chipset is Intel latest offering and the only chipset supporting Intel socket LGA2011 Sandy Bridge E CPUs. The chipset itself sounds awesome when you talk about 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, quad channel memory support, support for up to 64GB of RAM and then you get to the depressing fact that the chipset still doesn support more than 2 SATA III / 6Gb/s devices natively and there is still no native support for USB 3.0.

The ASRock X79 Extreme9 uses a 16+ Toms Outlet 2 power phase design and all “gold” solid electrolytic capacitors. In addition to the usual chipset supported features, the ASRock X79 Extreme9 is a feature rich solution which supports the more popular multi GPU solutions including, SLI, 3 Way SLI, Quad SLI, and CrossFireX in varying configurations. The board also supports an astounding 12 SATA ports, 2 eSATA ports, 6 USB 3.0 ports, (2 via USB 3.0 headers) and of course dual Toms Outlet Gigabit Ethernet.

Being unified, the X79 chipset consists of a single chip which resides where the south bridge would have been placed in days past. It is cooled with a flat heatsink with an inset fan which annoys the crap out of me. Seriously, the cooling fan is fairly loud. I prefer passive solutions when possible because tiny fans like this are known to sometimes be problematic. It doesn help that ASRock went “EXTREME” with the marketing here putting an “X” wherever an empty spot was on the board. It seems as though ASRock is still in its infancy in these marketing areas while we are seeing MSI and Gigabyte somewhat rejoining those ranks when it comes to idiotic marketing efforts here North America.

The expansion slot area is a prime example of what I like to see. Legacy free, and lots of PCIe x16 slots. Even if they are only 8x electrically speaking. The ASRock X79 Extreme supports either a 16x0x16x0 or an 8x8x8x8 configuration for multi GPU configurations. Of course actually installing four video cards means one or more of them would have to be a single slot solution and that most likely means water cooling. And for 3 Way SLI or CrossFire X with stock air cooling, your chassis would need to allow the bottom most card to hang over the edge of the motherboard. More and more are being built to allow it, but this may cause issues for some of you. This isn a deal breaker, just something you should be aware of upfront.

When the application is launched, it gives us the hardware monitor first. From here we can see our current CPU speed, BCLK/PCIE frequency, CPU ratio, CPU temperature, SB temperature, fan speeds and even our motherboard voltages. Next is the fan control which allows us to adjust our target fan speeds, and target temperatures to either allow us to maximize cooling or minimize fan noise. As you can see we have several controllable fan headers here that we can manipulate. Next we have the fairly rudi Toms Outlet mentary overclocking utility. This allows us to alter our BCLK, CPU ratio, and many of our voltages. I seen utilities that offer a far more robust choice of settings, but this one actually does cover all the basics.

The OC DNA menu is a profile system. With this you can create, save and load profiles at any time. There are three slots with which to store presets. At the top of this screen we have our board model, BIOS version and BIOS date shown. The IES menu is the Intelligent Energy Saver. With this we can set the board for power savings, or we can turn this off to enhance overclockability by enabling all the power phases. The number of active phases is shown to the right. The XFast RAM feature is something added recently. It a tweaking tool for the OS. From here we can adjust page file, temporary file, browser cache file settings and more.

It a solid utility. I seen some that I liked better and some I seriously disliked. When all is said and done I never allow software to dictate what hardware I purchase save for drivers.

You may have already figured out from the previous pictures that all mainboards in this family come in identically designed packages. There is a portrait of Jonathan Wendel gamer and the Fatal1ty logo in the center of the red and black box. ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional comes in a vertical box with a plastic carry handle.Starting recently ASRoc Toms Outlet k mainboards come not only carefully wrapped into an anti static bag. The thin protective pad has been replaced with a frame made of some porous material. Besides the actual mainboard, the box contains the following accessories:Six Serial ATA cables with metal connector locks, half with L shaped locks and another half with straight ones;Two power adapters for SATA devices;A bridge for Nvidia SLI graphics configurations;A bracket with two USB 3.0 ports plus a bracket for the back panel with a set of retention screws;I/O Shield for the back panel;A brochure about the functionality of mainboard BIOS and accompanying software;User manual in multiple languages;DVD disk with software and drivers.There is nothing unusual about these accessories. I would only like to point out Toms Outlet that the mainboard comes with a very convenient universal module with two USB 3.0 ports. By default, it is intended to be installed into the free 3 inch bay and deliver two USB 3.0 ports to the front of the system case. However, if you have a new case that already comes with USB 3.0 ports on the front panel, or if you do not have an empty 3 inch bay in the front, then you can use an enclosed bracket and screws set to place these ports in the ba Toms Outlet ck of the system case. Besides ASRock mainboards, only some mainboards from Elitegroup come with the modules and brackets offering such extensive functionality. The only advantage the ECS modules have is that their cable is a lit Toms Outlet tle bit longer.

ASRock Designs LGA1156 Motherboard Based on Intel P67 Chipset

ASRock is known to mix and match sockets and chipsets to come up with some interesting hybrids that give users access to latest features offered by the chipset. A recent example of this is a socket 939 motherboard based on the AMD 785G chipset (read here), which gives users of socket 939 Athlons access to a fast IGP and PCI Express 2.0. The company’s l Toms Outlet atest such innovation is the P67 Transformer. This is a socket LGA1156 motherboard, it supports existing Core i5/Core i7 “Lynnfield”, and Core i3/Core i5 “Clarkdale” processors, but is based on the Intel P67 Express chipset. The board gives users access to some advanced features of the P67 chipset, but won’t support LGA1155 processors.

So what’s in it for you? Well, the P67 PCH embeds a PCI Express 2.0 hub compared to P55/H55, which pack an older PCI Express 1.1 hub. The older hub is known to heavily bottleneck devices such as USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s controllers that use only a single PCI E lane (since PCI E 1.1 has 250 MB/s per direction bandwidth, compared to 500 MB/s on the PCI E 2.0). So significant is this bottleneck, that some motherboard designers even used bridge chips that convert the P55’s PCI E 1.1 x4 port to two PCI E 2.0 x1, for USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s controllers. The PCI E x16 slots however, are wired to the processor and are Gen 2. ASRock’s board hence gives you two USB 3.0 and two SATA 6 Gb/s with an alleviated bus bottleneck.

The P67 Toms Outlet Transformer is a standard ATX board with an LGA1156 socket, four DIMMs for dual channel DDR3, one PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot for graphics, three PCI E x1, and two PCI. Storage connectivity includes two SATA 6 Gb/s, four internal SATA 3 Gb/s, eSATA. There are two USB 3.0 ports, a number of USB 2.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, and 8 channel HD audio. ASRock claims that this board is capable of extremely high memory overclocking capabilities. It masked the rated DDR3 frequency capability on the motherboard, and is challenging you to guess it on its Facebook page. A lucky winners gets one of these boards. The P67 Transfo Toms Outlet rmer will be out in early December. Later I switched to a Toms Outlet PCI E card without the need to buy a new mobo. I think it’s great there’s a company out there that’s not afraid to experiment, keep it up ASrock!I’m using one as I type this. 😎
