Attach the standards to the bottom
: Plastic Bags Easter Basket This is an Easter basket woven from recycled plastic bags. Easter and Earth Day are close together this year which gave me the ide Toms Shoes a. I am not sure how many bags I used but it was probably around 20. In a basket, the vertical spines are called “standards”. The horizontal pieces are called “weavers”. Arrange your prepared standards around the edge of the base. This will look like rays of the sun, (unless your basket is square). Now that your standards are attached to the base, bend them so they are standing up. Now you will use your plarn, and begin weaving. Keep weaving until you get within about half an inch from the top of the standards. At this point, I decided I wanted to decorate the basket rim and make it more substantial looking. You can decorate the basket with plastic bag flowers, or you can cut out letters from sheets of fused p Toms Shoes lastic and spell a ch.Arrange Toms Shoes your prepared standards around the edge of the base. This will look like rays of the sun, (unless your basket is square). The open end of the standards is then sewn to the base, which seals the picket and encloses the wire completely.Sew all your standards to the base as shown. If you use the sewing machine, be careful to walk the needle over the wires Toms Shoes so you don’t break the needle. Use a long stitch length, because short stitch length makes many holes close together which can cause tearing. (Ir’s like a perforated line)
Attach end of plastic strip to spindle tip and spin
: Knit Plastic Bag Handbag This project explains how to spin yarn from ordinary plastic grocery bags. This yarn can then be knit into a handbag. You will need 1. Don’t use your best sewing scissors for this. The pictured spindle is a round piece of wood with a dowel glued Toms Shoes through it. The bag shown has a very simple pattern. The body of the bag is a long strip of nothing but knit s.Follow a spiral pattern arou Toms Shoes nd the bag to get one long strip from the entire bag. Don’t use your best sewing scissors for this. Cutting plastic bags dulls scissors quickly.Step 2: Attach end of plastic strip to spindle tip and spinSpindles are the simplest way to spin fiber, or plastic bags. T Toms Shoes he pictured spindle is a round piece of wood with a dowel glued through Toms Shoes it. The end of the dowel has two narrow saw cuts at the end to attach the end of the string to .Once attached, grab the spindle by the point of attachment and spin between your fingers. The weight on the bottom keeps the spindle spinning. Hold the plastic strip in your other hand and pay out the strip as it twists into yarn. When you get to the end of one strip of plastic, you don’t need to tie one strip to the next. Just overlap the two ends, fold them together and continue spinning. The twisting together will be enough to join the two strips.Step 5: Knit your plastic yarnSadly, I don’t have action pictures of this step. The bag shown has a very simple pattern. The body of the bag is a long strip of nothing but knit stitch. The handles are another long strip of the same stitch. The two pieces were sewn together using more plastic yarn. This bag was a first attempt. Some suggestions for improvement.1. The fabric is surprisingly heavy duty. Keep to purse size, or make something you don’t plan on lugging around. This large tote bag is a little bulky.
Researc Toms Shoes h from the University of East Anglia reveals that community led sustainable energy projects are not being taken seriously enough by the government. The research team looked at 12 small scale projects which aim to reduce energy consumption in local communities across the UK. These included a solar panel project in Brighton, an eco home development in Bristol, hydro electricity generation in Cumbria, and a community island buy out on the Isle of Gigha in Scotland.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, EDF EnergyStudy strengthens link between neonicotinoids and collapse of honey bee coloniesTwo widely used neonicotinoids a class of insecticide appear to significantly harm honey bee colonies over the winter, particularly during colder w Toms Shoes inters, according to Harvard School of Public Health researchers. The study replicated a 2012 finding from the same research group that found a link between imidacloprid and Colony Collapse Disorder, in which bees abandon their hives over the winter and eventu Toms Shoes ally die. The new study found low doses of a second neonicotinoid, clothianidin, had the same negative effect.Wells Fargo Foundation, Breck Fund at the Harvard University Center for the EnvironmentImproving air quality in NYC would boost children’s future earningsReducing air pollution in New York City would result in substantial economic gains for children as a result of increasing their IQs.NIH/National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, US Environmental Protection Agency, John and Wendy Neu Family Foundation, Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller Fund, New York Community TrustFirst ever study describes deep sea animal communities around a sunken shipping containerThousands of shipping containers are lost from cargo vessels each year. In 2004, scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a lost shipping container almost 1,300 meters below the surface of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. In the first ever survey of its kind, researchers from MBARI and the sanctuary recently described how deep sea animal communities on and around the container differed from those in surrounding areas.David and Lucile Packard Foundation, NOAAAirborne measurements confirm leaks from oil and gas operationsDuring two days of intensive airborne measurements, oil and gas operations in Colorado’s Front Range leaked nearly three times as much methane, a greenhouse gas, as predicted based on inventory estimates, and seven times as much benzene, a regulated air toxic. Emissions of other chemicals that contribute to summertime ozone pollution were about twice as high as estimates, according to the new paper, accepted for publication in the American Geophysical Union’s Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres.Ban cigarette filters to save the environment, suggest researchersBan cigarette filters. Start a deposit return scheme for used butts. Hold manufacturers responsible for clean ups. Place warnings on packets about the impact of simply flicking one’s used cigarettes away. These are among the policy measures that Thomas Novotny of the San Diego State University in the US and Elli Slaughter advocate to curb the environmental harm done through the large scale littering of cigarette butts, packaging and matches.Ozone levels drop 20 percent with switch from ethanol to gasolineA Northwestern University study by an economist and a chemist reports that when fuel prices drove residents of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to mostly switch from ethanol to gasoline in their flexible fuel vehicles, local ozone levels dropped 20 percent. At the same time, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide concentrations tended to go up. The four year study is the first real world trial looking at the effects of human behavior at the pump on urban air pollution.National Science Foundation, Institute for Sustainability and Energy at NorthwesternNitrogen pollution, climate and land use: Why what we eat mattersA new report quantifies for the first time how much our food choices affect pollutant nitrogen emissions, climate change and land use across Europe. The executive summary of the European Nitrogen Assessment Special Report on Nitrogen and Food, ‘Nitrogen on the Table,’ was released today Friday, April 25, 2014. The special report provides Toms Shoes an assessment of what would happen if Europe were to decrease its consumption of meat and dairy products.UNECE Task Force on Reactive NitrogenHow to avoid water wars between ‘fracking’ industry and residentsThe shale gas boom has transformed the energy landscape in the US, but in some drier locations, it could cause conflict among the energy industry, residents and agricultural interests over already scarce water resources, say researchers. They add that degraded water quality is a potential risk unless there are adequate safeguards. The feature article appears in the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science Technology.
